Why You Were Referred to Center for Vascular Medicine

Posted March 19, 2024

Your superficial vein specialist from Center for Vein Restoration has referred you to Center for Vascular Medicine for evaluation of the deep veins.

Our legs house a complex network of veins responsible for returning blood to the heart. There are two distinct highway systems within this network: the superficial and deep veins. While they may seem separate, these leg veins work together to keep blood flowing efficiently. Understanding this partnership is crucial for treating leg vein problems.

Deep vs. Superficial Veins

Imagine the deep veins as major highways running beneath the muscles. These large veins carry the bulk of the blood from your legs. These veins ensure blood flow returns towards the heart.

The superficial veins are like smaller secondary roads located closer to the skin's surface. They collect blood from the skin and muscles and drain it into the deep veins. You can think of these drainages as ramps onto the highway.

Continuing the analogy, if there is a blockage or issue in the secondary roads, there will be congestion and insufficient access to the highways. If there is a blockage or issue on the highways, then the side roads get congested as well. Therefore, maintaining both systems is critical.

The terminology used here is particularly apt because the common disease states associated with the lower extremity veins are Pelvic Venous Insufficiency, Pelvic Congestion Syndrome, and Chronic Venous Insufficiency, among others.

Treating Both Systems for Optimal Results

Traditionally, treatments focused on one system or the other. However, recent advancements recognize the interconnectedness of the leg vein network. Here's why treating both systems is key:

• Improved Blood Flow: Addressing issues in both superficial and deep veins optimizes overall blood flow, reducing pressure and minimizing the risk of more severe symptoms such as DVT and ulcer formation.

• Faster Symptom Relief & Recovery: A multi-system approach can lead to faster symptom relief and improved long-term outcomes for patients.

Conclusion

The leg vein system is complex. By understanding the relationship between superficial and deep veins, doctors can develop comprehensive treatment plans that address the root cause of leg vein issues, leading to better patient outcomes and improved quality of life. If you're experiencing leg pain, swelling, or varicose veins, our healthcare professionals can help develop a treatment plan that addresses both your superficial and deep vein health.
