PAD Treatment can Improve Heart Health

Posted November 13, 2019
This month, American Heart Month, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) focuses our attention on cardiovascular disease (which includes heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure) and heart health. Cardiovascular disease remains the NUMBER 1 killer of U.S. adults, disproportionately affecting the African American population. The physicians and staff of the Center for Vascular Medicine are taking this opportunity to remind us that Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is one of the most under diagnosed conditions that can raise your risk of heart attack and stroke. Understanding the common signs of PAD is an important part of getting the treatment you need to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and improving your quality of life: PAD can often be the underlying cause of chronic leg pain and/or slow healing wounds on the feet which can make moving around painful. PAD is caused by a build up of plaque within the arteries, leading to blockages that significantly reduce oxygen-rich blood flow to the extremities. This type of blockage, called "atherosclerosis" can be accelerated by certain lifestyle habits such as smoking and is more prevalent in people who may be overweight, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Addressing PAD can be the start to restoring your overall health! This month, take a moment to assess your heart health and consider how your lifestyle or current health issues could be affecting your quality of life- or life expectancy! If you suffer with leg pain or have reduced mobility, come in for a consultation with one of our experienced physicians who can assess your risk of having PAD and recommend appropriate testing. Diagnosing PAD is quick, painless and can take place in one of our convenient locations around the state. Treating PAD can be life changing- and possible life saving!
