You don't have to live with chronic pelvic pain!

Posted November 13, 2019

At the Center for Vascular Medicine, we see patients every day who have been suffering with the symptoms and side effects of Pelvic Congestions Syndrome (PCS) or May-Thurner Syndrome, both under-diagnosed conditions that can be treated successfully by our physicians with minimally invasive procedures.

Typical symptoms are chronic pelvic pain, discomfort and a dull achy feeling in the pelvic region which may worsen during intercourse or menstruation. These symptoms can often affect a patient's quality of life and relationships with partners. But there is no need to live with the effects of these treatable disorders. PCS and May-Thurner can be diagnosed by our specialists at the Center for Vascular Medicine with the use of ultra-sound, laparoscopy, and x-rays. These non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures, performed in several of our locations throughout Maryland, can identify a venous insufficiency in the pelvic region, often the result of one or more pregnancies. Our physicians will also conduct a thorough examination and gain an understanding of your personal medical history before recommending treatment.

Treatment Options

  • Venoplasty and stenting: often a recommended treatment for May-Thurner Syndrome patients, this process restores healthy blood flow by inserting a balloon and stent into the collapsed veins to reopen them.
  • Embolization therapy: similar to sclerotherapy used in leg veins, this process will restore healthy blood flow by collapsing problem veins.
  • Bypass surgery: in some cases, this option is recommended to fully restore healthy blood flow in the pelvic region. All of these treatment options are completed in an outpatient setting and will give patients a better quality of life: they experience a feeling of renewed energy without the frequent pain they were suffering, and the welcome return of intimacy in their personal relationships.

Our physicians will determine the best treatment options for you, and ensure that you understand the procedure, expected outcome and recommended post treatment instructions. Schedule a consultation with one of our doctors at any of our 5 locations if you have been experiencing chronic pelvic pain for the last six or more months.
